At the Ouse Washes - The hides nearest to the railway line are the most profitable. Excellent numbers of Whoopers (well in excess of 1,000, plus considerably smaller numbers of Bewick's. Waders include Black-tailed Godwits (40+), Ruff, Dunlin, Redshank, Snipe. Duck numbers are impressive with huge numbers of Wigeon, plus Teal, Pintail, Gadwall and Shoveler. Single White-fronted Goose and Short-eared Owl were seen. Good numbers of Tree Sparrow can still be seen at the Visitor Centre (Dave Griffiths).
At Little Paxton drake and 2 redhead Smews around midday on Island Pit. Also 15 Goosanders (11 of them drakes) split between Heronry North and Washout Pit. Other wildlife of interest included ca 100 Shovelers, 1 Redshank; and 2 Foxes sunning themselves on the west bank of Island Pit. (Ian Dawson).
At Milton Tip 1 adult male Caspian Gull, 2CY Yellow-legged Gull, plus an Eastern Jackdaw (Richard Thomas).
At Grafham Water an adult Kittiwake west at 12.00 and another (same?) in the roost at 15.30, also a pair of Mandarin, 5 Goosander, 45 Ruddy duck, Common Buzzard & 33 Dunlin (Steve Cooper).

Also 10 Stonechat and 60 Bewick's Swans on reserve (Jonathan Taylor). At dawn 3 Barn Owls near the car park, 2 ringtail Hen Harriers, 1 ad Peregrine, 65 Bewick's Swan flew east, 12 Whooper (incl 4 juvs), thousands of Lapwing, 260 Golden Plover counted at dawn but many hundreds more arriving soon after from fields to the south, 100+ Dunlin, 4+ Redshank, 2 Water Rail, male Stonechat at car park (Brian Stone).

RICHARD'S PIPIT at Kingfisher's Bridge flew east at 1305 hrs (over an appreciative and well rewarded working party) before heading back west towards Stretham. No further sign by about 1545 hrs. Please note: Kingfisher's Bridge is a private site. Details of the next working party (early-mid December) will be posted on Cambirds by Bruce Martin. Perhaps a Penduline Tit will be discovered! At Grafham Water 1 CY GREY PHALAROPE & Common Scoter still at the dam (RBA).
A the Nene Washes, central drove (6:45-8:45) 4 adult Bewick's Swans, 2 Pintail 1+ ringtail Hen Harrier, 1 ad female Merlin, 125+ Dunlin on the first field on the right past the cow sheds with 1 Little Stint (possibly 2 more Stints seen further east),1 Ruff, 2 Redshank, large numbers of Lapwing and Golden Plover, 12+ Snipe, 7+ Stonechats (Brian Stone).
At the Ouse washes RSPB good gull roost building up at welches dam hide, mostly Black-headed Gulls (3000) and some larger gulls, and at Cadbury hide another roost of the same amount. Whoopers and Bewicks are staying in the day on the washes. Short-eared Owl on the arable opposite Stevens hide on 14/11. Daily sightings of 3 Brambling at visitor car park & up to 8 Tree Sparrows feeding on the grain nr visitor centre with mixed finch flock (Leigh Marshall).

SNOW BUNTING in fields SW of A14 road bridge on minor road between Stow-cum-Quy and Little Wilbraham at TL 534 598 (RBA). Still present at 9.40 AM when it was on the track between stubble field and winter wheat field (John Oates).
Barnacle Goose, 10 Redshanks on the Cam Washes, Upware (John Oates).
Male Brambling, probably an adult with a flock of about 50 Chaffinches on Flag Fen - viewable from a car by pulling in at the red gates on the new entrance to the Flag Fen Iron Age Settlement. Head out towards North Bank and the gate is on your right just past where the road turns sharply right at the Willow Hall Drove turn. TL231991. (Brian Stone).

DOTTEREL at Wicken Fen, on Baker's Fen with 400 Golden Plovers and a Grey Plover this PM (Ian Barton). Still present at dusk (Bruce & Gwen Martin, John Oates). Please note: the birds on Baker's Fen can be easily spooked so please take care if visiting. Loud noises seem to be the source of most disturbance, but with a little care it is possible to get very good views.
At Grafham Water 3 Common Buzzards - from Mander, 35 Goldeneyes. At the dam 2 Grey Wags, 2 Lesser Redpolls, ROCK PIPIT - near the tower, Common Sandpiper - north end, Green Sand - south end (Bruce & Gwen Martin, John Oates). On 31st October at the dam SAKER at 16:05 for 10+ minutes pursuing and being pursued by both Herring and Lesser Black-backed Gulls then flew west towards Savages Creek. Swift sp over Shrewsbury Avenue area of Orton Longueville, P'boro briefly at 4.02pm (Steve Dudley). A small number of Pallid Swifts have been reported on the east coast of England recently - clearly any Swift at the moment is worth looking at closely - if it stays long enough!
At Grafham Water, dam area ROCK PIPIT & 2 Grey Wags. Also 8 Siskins flew over (Mark Hawkes).

AMERICAN GOLDEN PLOVER 2nd calendar year (1st summer) still present with approx. 600 Goldies at Swaffham Prior Fen, but highly mobile and appearances erratic. Also 2 Marsh Harriers, Green Sand, Whinchat, Wheatear, Merlin (several observers). Adult American Goldies usually moult into winter plumage at the wintering grounds, therefore this bird (which shows only traces of summer plumage) is most likely in first summer plumage (John Oates).
At Paxton Pits 3 Little Stints, Whinchat, Stonechat (RBA).
Hobby flew over A10 c3 miles N of Waterbeach (RBA).
Garganey still present on Long Drove, Cottenham 5/10 & 4/10. Also Green Sand (Richard Thomas).

AMERICAN GOLDEN PLOVER this afternoon at Swaffham Prior Fen TL548683 near Upware, with approx 600 Golden Plovers. In large field between the carrot packing factory & the large barn - take the minor road south from Upware & go straight ahead at the sharp right bend to view fields. It flew off towards Reach at 5.05 PM. No further sign by dusk (Ian Delgado, Bruce & Gwen Martin, John Oates). This is the first county record. Also Wheatear (Ian Delgado, Chris Kelly).
At Prior's Fen 3 SCAUP (1 ecl male, 1 adult female, 1 juvenile Scaup) on east pit a.m. The duck are very flighty. Approach from Stone Bridge Corner and view the duck as soon as the water comes into view. Moving further along the path will almost certainly put the duck up. Please keep to the footpath that runs between the pits and the dyke. (Brian Stone).

Go through yellow barrier and Shrike is down track, favouring the brambles and fruit trees on the right and the thick hedge (David Wege). Still present at 5.30 PM (RBA).

Common Buzzard over and Hobby near Lagoons. REDSTART at the Plummer car park end of the dam in Silver Birches late PM. A count of Lesser Black-backed Gulls during the evening revealed 3246 from the dam & 1000+ from Mander - there were birds still coming in at dark (Steve Cooper).

On occasions was mobbed by another Sand Martin and also a House Martin. At Wicken Fen 4 SPOONBILLS this am from Brett's Hide until c9.20 AM, when flew off high to the NE (John Oates, BLEA, NT). They were present again 2-3 PM (RBA). Still present at dusk (Ian Delgado). One individual was ringed as a nestling at Vlieland, Netherlands on 07/06/01. It has also been seen at Minsmere, Suffolk and Breydon Water, Norfolk. The bird has a blue ring with white letters RR above each 'knee' - code is aB[RR]/B[RR] & metal ring number is NLA 8042249 (Many thanks to Otto Overdijk of Workinggroup Spoonbills International for the information). Also in the area 2 Marsh Harriers, 2 Barn Owls, Greenshank, Dunlin, Green Sand, Kingfisher (Ian Delgado, John Oates).

At Grafham Water RED-NECKED PHALAROPE & PURPLE SANDPIPER on/from the dam 1/2 way between the water tower and Marlow car park. Both juv (Richard Allison). Phalarope flew off c10.10 AM, but the Purple Sand still present late PM. Also Common Buzzard over the dam, Common Sand, Ringed Plover, Dunlin. No sign of either Manxie or Fulmar all day (Mark Hawkes et al).

At Grafham Water MANX SHEARWATER & FULMAR still present till late PM. Also Common Buzzard, Common Sand, plenty of Yellow Wags, many 100's of Hirundines, 3+ Swifts and a reported Kittiwake (many observers).
At Wicken Fen Wood Sand flew over the reedbed and a Buzzard sp. late PM (most likely a Honey Buzzard) went west over the reedbed (Rich Billington).
Ferry Meadows 3 Wood Sands & a Green Sand (Mike Turland). Also Garganey imm in front of wooden hide, Spotted Fly 5, Chiffchaff 7, Willow Warbler 1, Swift 1 (Steve Dudley).
At Elton, 1 Hobby, 1 Yellow Wagtail, 1 probable Peregrine distantly to west (roughly over Wood Newton area) grappling with Red Kite then soaring high and stooping (Brian Stone).
On 8/9 A Honey Buzzard drifted south over the reserve at 9.00 AM (George Waltham).

At Grafham Water MANX SHEARWATER from dam mid PM onwards (Richard Patient et al) and FULMAR ranging around the reservoir from early AM onwards (John Oates et al). Other birds seen include Buzzard, Hobby, Common Sand and several Yellow Wags (various observers). Another Manxie was found in Beds this PM at Brogborough Lake (RBA).
At Ferry Meadows REDSTART still present lunchtime, 8+ Spotted Flycatchers, 20+ Chiffchaffs, 2 Willow Warblers, Garden Warbler, 2 Blackcaps, Green Sandpiper, 2 Wigeon, Grey Wagtail by visitor centre (Gordon Hamlett).

Female/imm REDSTART at Ferry Meadows. Also Garganey in front of the second (wooden) hide though it can be elusive. (Matt Webb per Gordon Hamlett). Redstart still present at 12.45 PM. From the visitor centre, walk towards the nature reserve, over the bridge and left along the side of Heron Meadow (towards the pontoon bridge) and after c100 yards, it is in the triangle of bushes by the path by the line of pollarded willows (with little fences around) (ie its between the nature reserve bridge and the pontoon bridge). In this area Spotted Fly 8, Chiffchaff 7, Garden Warbler 1. Elsewhere at Ferry Meadows Spot Fly 5, Chiffchaff 9, Willow Warbler 1, Green Sand 1 (from new hide), Wigeon 4 (from new hide), Sand Martin 800+ over Overton, Lynch and Gunwade lakes, Swallow 80+, House Martin 6, Swift 1 (Steve Dudley).
