Other birds included Chiffchaff, 5 Ruddy Ducks, 50+ Pintails, 3 Redshanks, 1 Dunlin and many Golden Plovers flying about. (John Oates).

At Fen Drayton GP 4 Bewick's Swans on Elney Lake (flew off north at 2pm), in fields towards Fenstanton many Golden Plovers, Lapwings and several Dunlins. Between Ferry Pond and Ferry Mere 50-60 Ruffs, 12 Blackwits, 100+ Pintails. The water level has receaded significantly over the last few days (Dave Anderson). At Wicken Fen on 17th Marsh Tit, male Hen harrier. A monster Blackbird was caught. The wing was 3 mm longer than has ever been seen in Britain and from a preliminary look in the books, only the very far Eastern race maximus would have a wing this long. (Rich Billington).

On 10/12 at the A14 field, Milton an adult Caspian Gull (different bird from the recent Grunty adult) and an "Eastern" Jackdaw, with a less prominent neck bar than the Grunty bird (Dick Newell). On 9/12 at Milton Tip 1 2CY Yellow-legged Gull (Dick Newell). Access by permit only.

At Grunty Fen on 9/12 the Eastern Jackdaw seems to be paired to a normal looking one - as it was being neck-preened by its mate. GLAUCOUS GULL still present. (Dick Newell).

At Fen Drayton GP this morning in poor weather and difficult viewing conditions Chiffchaff with Long-tailed Tits, but no sign of yesterdays Siberian Chiffchaff. Birds flying over included 5 Blackwits, 7 Dunlins and a few hundred Golden Plovers (Richard Hall, Chris Kelly, John Oates).

On 3/12 a colour-ringed (green with yellow letters left leg X 566) argentatus Herring Gull at Milton Tip (Dick Newell, Richard Patient). It was ringed in Germany on 21/6/96 and has also been recorded in Holland (Ronald Klein per Dick Newell).

At March Farmers, Nene Washes 3/12 2 Short-eared Owls and 100 Bewick's Swans (RBA).

3rd December

SIBERIAN CHIFFCHAFF at Fen Drayton in bushes between Drayton Lake and Holywell Lake this afternoon. 3 Common Chiffchaffs also there. (Chris Kelly). Wildfowl included first-winter drake Smew (on pit to the right after crossing the bridge from the Swavesey entrance), first-winter drake Scaup (Elney Lake) (David Bradnum, David Griffiths/Cambridge) and an apparent drake Tufted Duck x Pochard hybrid (Elney Lake) (Richard Hall, Bruce & Gwen Martin, John Oates, Richard Patient).

At Grunty Fen today juv-1st w GLAUCOUS GULL. What looks like last years adult Caspian Gull has returned (fairly bright bill and legs). Also ca 6 Yellow-legged Gulls (1 adult, 1 2CY, ca 4 1CY), Eastern Jackdaw (Dick Newell).

Saker and a Peregrine back on the Ouse Washes at Earith again this morning - causing utter panic amongst Golden Plovers and Lapwings in the adjoining fields (David Griffiths/Cambirds). The Saker was seen well by Dave Suddaby at the Ouse Washes RSPB in late November. It had no jesses and seemed to be an immature (per John Oates).

At Fen Drayton 4 Red-crested Pochards (female north of railway l ine and 2 males, 1 female south of railway line), 2 Siskins, 5 Ruddy Ducks (Richard Hall, John Oates). Yesterday at Grunty Fen a ringed 1st w probable Caspian Gull hybrid (with either Yellow legged or Herring) with a green ring on its left leg, a bright shiny metal ring on the right leg, and I think the first letter at the top was X.(Dick Newell). If the first letter is "X" and on top, the bird was hatched in the famous mixed "Kleinkoschen" colony (51.30 N; 14.04 E). The second letter should be F or G (Ronald Klein per Dick Newell). SNOW BUNTING still on the Nene Washes this morning, showing well on the bank 1.5 miles west of Eldernell (Mark Hawkes). Still present at 1pm. From the car park, walk beyond the wood, over the first fence, then c3/4 of the way to the next fence look for a obvious patch of brown dead thistles/weeds on the water's edge. The bird was midway between here and the next fence on the washes side of the wall feeding on grass seeds. (Cambirds).

No news on the Bimaculated Lark reported yesterday.

16th November

At Ferry Meadows an unconfirmed report of a Bimaculated Lark on left 100yds along track opposite golf course (RBA). No sign later on but directions apparently poor! (Mark Hawkes).

At Woodwalton Fen in 4 hrs this morning 3 Willow Tits, 2 Marsh Tits, 5 Coal Tits + Blue, Great & Long-tailed, Woodcock, 3 Water Rails, Kingfisher, Chiffchaff, Siskin, 34 Goldcrests, 49+ Robins. (Steve Cooper).

At Orton BP adult Med Gull (which came in late with Common Gulls), 198 Greater Black-backed Gulls, 430 Common Gulls, but very few Herring or BHG. Also 2 Water Rail and Chiffchaff (Steve Cooper).

At Dogsthorpe Tip, the mix of gulls totally different to Milton there were more Greater Black-backed (89) than Lesser (31), Herring Gull numbers very poor which was surprising, but a good number of BHG (1000+). (Steve Cooper).

On the Cam Washes, Upware Little Egret in trees with cormorants 2.55 - 3.30pm at least. Also Polish Swan again (now well grown), 10 Golden Plovers, 400 Lapwing, 4 Redshanks, 150 Wigeons (John Oates).

At Wicken Fen, Tower Hide this evening male Hen Harrier and 2 Barn Owls (John Oates). Around the reserve 2 Stonechats, male Blackcap. Recently up to 13 Lesser Redpolls and 5 Siskins, and on the bird table Marsh and Willow Tit regular (Ian Barton).

At Sutton Gault a pair of Stonechats, 2 Water Rails, 1 Dunlin, 4 Pochards, 3 Little Grebes, 1 Great Crested Grebe (Mark Peck).

At Eldernell 1 female Marsh Harrier, 2 Sparrowhawks, 1 Short-eared Owl, Water Rail heard, Green Woodpecker. On the Nene Washes at Eldernel Marsh Harrier and female Peregrine + several thousand wildfowl. Washes now deeply flooded and B1040 is impassable unless in 4WD or lorry!! On Nov 7th a Hooded Crow at west end of March Farmers. (Jonathan Taylor).

At Fen Drayton at noon Golden Plover numbers have increased to c2000, Lapwing similar. On the flooded field were 32 Dunlin, 9 Ruff and 49 Redshank (though most of these flew off west). It's still not possible to get round the pits (Bruce Martin). Late afternoon 78 snipe probably many more! 12 Dunlin, 12 Redshank, 8 Ruff, 70+ Fieldfare (this morning). At Sutton Gault 1 male Stonechat, 1 Kingfisher, 1 Water Rail, 1 Sparrowhawk, 1 Snipe, (Mark Peck).

At Fen Drayton GP if the water rises another foot I doubt if we will be able to get beyond the iron bridge. 15-20 Dunlins, 4 Ruffs, 5 Redshanks (Dave Anderson).

Many more thrushes arriving e.g. 200 Fieldfares and 10 Redwings at Swaffham Prior Fen (John Oates), 200 Redwings north over Stangound (Rich Broughton), 161 Fieldfares and 57 Redwings at Wicken (Martin Lester), large flocks of both Redwings and Fieldfares over Earith (David Griffiths), 80 Fieldfares near Farcet and 20 near Chesterton (Brian Stone), in Cambridge lots of Blackbirds and Redwings - also a Redpoll. There were a lot of Redwings and a few Song Thrushes passing last night (Richard Billington). Also in Cambridge a huge Redwing passage 7/11 hearing on average about 1 bird every 2 minutes (Richard Hall).

At Wicken this evening there was 1 female Mandarin, 1 ringtail Hen Harrier, and a Barn Owl, all on or around the Mere (R.J.Hall, C.McAlmont).

At Fen Drayton GP the only way in is via the reserve entrance over the iron bridge. It is flooded from the village, you can't get to the disabled car park or along then road towards the railway. The field near the iron bridge is still flood and has a good number of waders. The ploughed field on the right of the entrance has the big numbers of Golden Plovers and Lapwings but there are others spread around the area. Bewick's Swan heard calling, 8 Pintail flew over, Golden Plover 1100, Lapwing 1800, Dunlin 11, Ruff 7, Snipe 10, Curlew 1, Redshank 1 and Stock Dove 52, (with the big flocks). (Bruce Martin). This am 8 Dunlin, 5 Redshank, 4 Ruff, 2 Fieldfare, 1 Goldeneye (Dave Anderson).

At Nene Washes COMMON CRANE viewable from south barrier bank, parking at Eldernell where it is 1km to the west feeding happily close to bank, so be careful not to scare it i.e keep on the south side and peep over. n.b. please refrain from using the reserve drove to avoid disturbance and it is flooding now. Also ringtail Hen Harrier, Little Stint and 100+ Ruff. (Jonathan Taylor).

STORM PETREL at Grafham Water briefly at the dam at 2.55pm then showing well for 10 minutes off the fishing lodge at Mander car park at about 3.15pm. It disappeared towards the north shore, but was not seen again by dusk. (Colin Addington, Mark Hawkes, John Oates). This is the first county record since 1979 and part of an influx of both Storm and Leach's Petrels into southern England. Also imm Kittiwake today (RBA).

At Wicken Fen there are two Stonechats around the Sedge/Verrall's Fen area, 1 male & 1 1st winter/female. There is also an imm female Peregrine around. Wildfowl numbers on last weeks count were quite high for October, Wigeon 783 (190 last yr), Teal 331 (136 last yr), Mallard 657 (300 last yr). The odd Green Sand has been reported as was a juv Marsh Harrier on 30th. No Hen Harriers yet. (Martin Lester)

GREY PHALAROPE flew south along the east side of the Ouse Washes at the railway bridge at about 9.20 am. Seemed to land but not relocated. This is presumably the same bird present recently at Welney and possibly the bird present in the spring at Welches Dam and in 1998-1999 at Mepal.

At Cow Lane GP there is a very pale starling amongst the large flock there - could not get a good look at it though, only saw it in flight. probably leucistic, but you never know - something to look out for. Also at least 10 Yellow-legged Gulls: 1 ad, 2 3CY, 3 2CY, 4 1CY. 1 Garganey still there. (Dick Newell).

WRYNECK in Cambridge in front of the Cambridge Uni Vet School along Madingley Road . Present since Monday (Per Chris Thorn). Still present this evening until 7.00pm when it flew into a tree in the car park. Much of the time it was feeding at the edge of the car park, close to the cycle rack. (several observers, including me!)

WOODLARK at Chippenham Fen, around the reserve entrance (BLEA).

At 1pm: 2 HONEY BUZZARDS circling low over the southern edge of Monks Wood (close enough to see the colour of their eyes!), one banked north and was lost behind the tree-line over the wood (thus might still be hanging around - as it didn't go south over the next 45 mins), the other carried on north, low over Bevill's Wood and was lost from sight there behind the trees. 20 mins later this or another HONEY BUZZARD got up out of Bevill's Wood and headed south before turning back north and thermalling over Bevill's Wood, getting extremely high before bulletting off south after about 10 mins. Osprey fishing at Shepreth pits (TL 398 476) this morning (10.30), last time we had one here it stayed for a few days. (per Steve Cooper).

Also 2 Clouded Yellow on pathway separating Elney and Moore 3/4 of the way to the sw corner. On Sunday 3rd 4 Greenshank, 2 Green Sand, 1 Common Sand, 4 Snipe, 4 Turtle Doves, 1 Hobby (first at FD for me since Red-foot left), 8 Yellow Wags, 2 Water Rail. Several hundred hirundines feeding on the vast numbers of insectcs over surfing pit area. Also at least 20 Swift in the same area (Dave Anderson).

Common Buzzards seen today over the BirdLife Secretariat at Girton, Cambridge, at about 3 pm discovered by Mike Crosby (Peter Herkenrath) and NE over Leverington at 10 am (Pager).

FOUR BALLS FARM Opposite the farm and to the south of the osier bed a large area of mud Green Sandpiper, 2 Greenshank. After visiting Welney (Great White Egret, 3 Spoonbills, 1 Wood Sandpiper etc.) we walked south on the west side of the Washes. 14.30. 1 adult Bewick's Swan, 1 female Marsh Harrier, 2 Hobbies, 2 Greenshank, 2 Dunlin, 1 Wood Sandpiper. At Paxton Pits: Little Egret seen on several occasions during the week, including Sunday 30th on New Workings (view from Diddington public footpath only). Also, Clouded Yellow, two Wood Sandpipers, Greenshank and three Common Sandpipers there. Little Egret has also been seen coming into roost on Washout Pit, Black-tailed Godwit there (27th). 18 Great Crested Grebes on Heronry Lakes, including three building nests (one already contains an egg), and a pair with 4 young on Sailing Lake. Their earlier brood of two are still present and includes one leucistic bird (Julian Hughes).
